A group of students in Callan (and their school vet) have been praised for going out of their way to save the life of an animal that was discovered very close to death recently.
Local councillor Joe Lyons has taken to social media to praise the Coláiste Abhainn Rí students, and explain how the situation arose.
"About two weeks ago, a group of students from Coláiste Abhainn Rí noticed a bird entangled in the front grid of a car that parked in West Street early one morning," he said.

"The students released the hen pheasant that was fairly well mashed into the grid, and looking at the lifeless and damaged body, at first presumed she was dead.
"They then brought her back to the school where they cared and looked after her for a fortnight, and yesterday brought her down to the Abbey Meadow Park where they released her to her wild freedom of the countryside.
"Credit to the students. In the season of goodwill, they had the heart and decency to save the creature and restore her back to her place in nature."
