OTD: 'Only one serious incident' during Christmas in Kilkenny

Kilkenny gardaí had the quietest Christmas for many years.

Crime was at a minimum and there was only one serious incident.

Apart from a slight fall off in the sale of drapery, business was booming and city traders reported one of their best ever festive seasons. Spending reached a record level.

There were two break-ins during the period. Magennis’ supermarket at John’s Green and Petronella Boutique, Rioch’s Street, were both entered.

A cash box and dress were taken from Petronella and 800 cigarettes stolen from the supermarket. Two persons caught by Kilkenny Gardaí were convicted by Justice Macken at Waterford Court for the Petronella break-in.

Gardaí are investigating the theft from the supermarket.

Mayor’s plea for unity
The Mayor of Kilkenny, Alderman Thomas Martin, has expressed hope that 1975 will be a year of unity.

In a message to the people of the city, Ald Martin made a strong plea for unity in sport, cultural affairs and in every other sphere where division has existed in the past.

“I don’t want to introduce politics into my New Year’s good wishes to the citizens,” he said, “but it would certainly be a very good thing if we could have less rancour and more co-operation in political life. I would also like to hope that this year will see a return to peace and prosperity for all.”

Big contract for firm
A Kilkennyman has just secured a huge £250,000 contract for a Waterford firm which manufactures sports equipment.

The contract for Camp Trails International, which operates at Waterford Industrial Estate, was finalised by Jim Hayes, Kilcreene Road, Kilkenny, who is vice-president of the company.

Yearbook in Africa
The Kilkenny GAA Yearbook is definitely growing in popularity.

A recent order came all the way from an exile in Limbe, Malawi, East Africa. It’s a simple indication of how much our exiles still cherish the games.

Athletes win medals
Young athletes from Tullaroan and the Kilkenny City Harriers clubs made the long journey to Donegal last weekend. It was well worthwhile as they brought home 23 All-Ireland medals - the greatest ever haul of All-Ireland medals won by the county.
