Four local organisations from Kilkenny were announced as county finalists in this year’s National Lottery Good Causes Awards on Tuesday.
The finalists included Twilight Community group in the community category which was established for the promotion, integration and social inclusion, focusing in particular on the needs of immigrants, ethnic minorities, disadvantaged and disability groups.
In the arts and culture section, Kilkenny for Arts Talent (KCAT) advanced to the national final. The collective based in Callan is dedicated to the fostering and nurturing of creative ambition and professional development in the arts while the nationally renowned Thomastown Paddlers Canoe club was selected in the sports section.
Finally, in the health and wellbeing category, the county finalist was North Kilkenny Community First Responders Group which provides life-saving assistance and training in the area.
The awards, now in their seventh year, aim to honour, showcase and celebrate the inspiring work being carried out nationwide by thousands of projects, clubs and individuals who have received support from Good Causes funding.
Announcing the county finalists, National Lottery CEO, Cian Murphy, said: “It’s an honour to announce and celebrate the 146 outstanding Good Cause beneficiaries selected as county finalists in this year’s Good Causes Awards, each one a shining example of the meaningful and lasting impact that projects, clubs and individuals have on communities across Ireland.”
Returning awards MC, Marty Whelan said: “Every year, we are inspired by the incredible work and stories behind our amazing Good Cause beneficiaries. This year’s county finalists represent the very best of who we are, selfless, passionate, and committed to making Ireland a better place.”
The county finalists will now be whittled down to 35 for the national final. The finalists will be announced during the summer and the awards ceremony will take place on Saturday, October 18 at Killashee House Hotel in Naas.
The total prize fund available on the night will be €100,000, where each of the seven category winners will receive €10,000 and the overall Good Cause of the Year will take home an additional €25,000.
