Kilkenny Citizens Information Centre on the Parade
The Citizens Information Network is celebrating its 50th anniversary of keeping the public informed about their rights, entitlements and responsibilities.
The service began in the 1970s when the National Social Service Council in conjunction with local community groups throughout Ireland, identified the need for generalist information services to help bridge the information gap between state services and the public.
On July 8, 1975, the first 25 centres were officially registered with the Kilkenny branch on the parade being among them.
The movement of so many public services online has been difficult for some groups in society and there’s still a strong demand for in-person use of Citizens Information.

The services dealt with 767,168 queries nationally in 2024, with 13,845 of these occurring at the Kilkenny centre.
Today the network is run by eight Regional Citizens Information Service companies and the Citizens Information Board. The services in Kilkenny are part of the South Leinster regional company.
The Citizens Information Phone Service based in Cork provides nationwide coverage from 9am to 8pm Monday to Friday and over 90 offices around the country provide a face to face service to clients across a wide range of topics.
