"True gentleman in and out of uniform, you've earned every moment of your retirement," another well wisher commented, while one person remarked: "I remember when we were kids on the street….best wishes in your retirement John."
"His dedication and hard work have been truly appreciated, and we wish him all the best in this new chapter," a garda spokesperson said.
