An independent Kilkenny councillor has described the withdrawal of Jim Gavin from the presidential race as 'a good thing'.
In a recent post on social media, Cllr Maurice Shortall (Castlecomer MD) stated that Gavin's withdrawal 'strips away the illusion that the process is open or fair'.

"His short-lived campaign showed how deeply controlled and stage-managed our political system has become," he said.
"The presidency, like so much else in Irish politics, is now a closed shop for establishment-approved candidates, not genuine voices of the people.

"The system needed a shake-up, and Gavin’s withdrawal proves what many of us have said for years — that the game is fixed long before the people ever get a say. It’s time to break that cycle and put power back where it belongs."
