A public meeting for residents of a scenic Kilkenny village, and supporters, is to be held to address plans for a windfarm in the south of the county.
Residents of Inistioge village and surrounding areas have launched a coordinated campaign opposing the proposed Curraghmore Wind Farm by development company Empower Renewables, saying that the project would cause irreversible harm to the local landscape, biodiversity, and community well-being.

The development plans include the construction of eight, industrial-scale wind turbines, reaching heights of 175 metres. Locals argue that the scale and location of the project make it unsuitable for the rural and heritage-rich setting of Inistioge.
“This is not simply a renewable energy project, it is an industrial facility being placed in the heart of a historic rural community,” said Patrick Croke, spokesperson for Protect Inistioge’s Environment.
“These turbines are incredible in their size and scale, much taller than the Dublin Spire, and will be among some of the tallest structures in the country if built, visible for miles and permanently altering our skyline, homes and health. We believe our environment and residents’ quality of life are being put at risk. To even consider planting them in such a peaceful rural setting is simply unbelievable.”
Key concerns raised by the community include: Noise and health effects; Environmental impact; Visual and heritage damage; Infrastructure and safety risks; and the effect on property prices.
“These turbines would fundamentally change the character of our village, undermine our tourism economy, and damage the natural habitats that define this area. In addition, the ability for local people to apply for planning permission in the area will be dramatically reduced if not prohibited altogether if this wind farm goes ahead.” Patrick said.
“We understand that renewables will play a role in Ireland’s future energy needs. However, we strongly oppose inappropriate developments in ill-suited locations,” he added.
“We are calling on Kilkenny City and County Council and An Bord Pleanála to reject this application and safeguard our rural community for future generations.”
Protect Inistioge’s Environment is encouraging residents and supporters to attend a public gathering, at Cois Abhann, Inistioge village, on March 19, at 7.30pm, to hear from a guest speaker, and make their views known. For more information, visit www.protectinistioge.ie.
