FSAI issues warning over 'potentially dangerous' bacteria in salmon

An alert has been issued by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) has recalled a batch of fish products from retailers due to the possibility of a dangerous bacteria being present.

Wrights of Howth organic smoked salmon has been found to contain the possible presence of Listeria monocytogenes. The batch number is 32P, while the 'use by' date displayed is June 22, 2023.

Symptoms of this specific bacteria infection can include mild flu-like symptoms, or gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea.

In rare cases, the infection can be more severe, causing serious complications. Some people are more vulnerable to Listeria monocytogenes, including pregnant women, babies, and people with weakened immune systems, including the elderly.

The time between initial infection and first symptoms appearing (incubation period) is on average, three weeks, but can range between three and 70 days.

The FSAI says retailers have been requested to remove the implicated batch from sale and display recall notices at point-of-sale.

Wholesalers/distributors are requested to contact their affected customers and recall the implicated batch and provide a point-of-sale recall notice to their retailer customers.

Caterers should not use the implicated batch.
