Supermac's has found itself embroiled in a trademark dispute with the GAA following an April Fools' joke gone awry.

The chain's social media platforms, including Instagram and Facebook, have been abruptly taken offline by Meta, the parent company of these social media platforms, in response to the threat of legal action by the GAA.

The controversy erupted over an April Fool’s Day post shared by Supermac’s on its social media platforms which featured a cleverly photoshopped image depicting Croke Park rebranded as Supermac’s Croke Park, with the fast-food giant's logo displayed across the pitch and screens.

The joke was intended to be light-hearted, drawing inspiration from the recent debate surrounding the renaming of Páirc Uí Chaoimh stadium in Cork earlier in the year.

Following the April Fool’s post, the GAA are reported to have filed a trademark complaint with Meta, the parent company of Instagram and Facebook, on April 1. In response to the complaint, Meta took action, suspending Supermac’s official social media accounts.

The suspension effectively restricts Supermac’s ability to interact with its online audience and promote its brand through these popular platforms.

A spokesperson for Supermac’s clarified with the Irish Independent that the April Fool’s Day post was intended purely as a humorous prank and was not meant to infringe upon any third-party trademark rights.

Supermac’s is now said to be actively working with Meta to resolve the dispute and reinstate its social media presence.
