Major operation to clear tents from Grand Canal now underway

A major operation to clear tents from the Grand Canal in Dublin is now underway.

A government statement confirmed the joint operation taking place this morning (Thursday May 9), the purpose of which is "to ensure the safe movement of people seeking international protection from the tents on the Grand Canal to International Protection Accommodation Service (IPAS)-designated accommodation".

The operation is a collaboration between the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth, the Department of Justice, An Garda Síochána, Dublin City Council, Waterways Ireland, and the HSE.

According to the Department of the Taoiseach, the IPAS-designated accommodation has toilets and showers, health services, indoor areas where food is provided, facilities to charge phones and personal devices, access to transport to and from Dublin City Centre, and 24-hour onsite security.

According to RTÉ, men who were living in the tents gathered their belongings and queued for buses parked beside the canal.

The tents steadily increased in number over the last week, with over 100 people believed to be living in the temporary shelters by the time they were removed.

It comes following a recent promise of action from Taoiseach Simon Harris to tackle the issue.
