Gardaí in Mayo were left baffled on Friday morning as they discovered a caged fox in the county.

In a statement, gardaí said: "Gardaí out conducting planned searches of a number of properties in Co Mayo first thing this morning didn’t quite anticipate finding a caged fox cub.

"He is a very precious little fellow," they added.

The Garda statement pointed out that "foxes are wild animals and it is a criminal offence to keep any wild animal in captivity."
