Good yard of cattle was on offer at Kilkenny Mart this week

After a weekend of disappointments on the sporting front, especially if you are a Village, Bennettsbridge, or Irish Rugby supporter, it’s been a grim time and the weather i.e. rain is doing nothing to raise the spirits.

Cattle
Last Thursday in Kilkenny Mart we again attracted a good yard of cattle with over 1300 on offer.
Plain cattle were a bit more difficult to sell but top notch continentals in both the bullock and heifer ring were ranging from €2.80 to €3.70 per kilo with one of the standout prices being €1130 for 6 char bullocks which weighed 305 kilo.

Heavy bullocks, e.g. in excess of 630 kilo, showed a slight reduction from the previous week’s trading, with the bulk ranging from €2.45 to €2.85 per kilo.
On the heifer front prices were similar to the previous week with the quality lots breaching the €3 per kilo barrier on a few occasions.

Cull cow numbers were smaller which I suggest will change in the coming weeks.
Remember, all cattle being offered for sale at our Thursday Mart should be entered before 3.30pm on Wednesday with weanlings to be entered before 3.30pm on Mondays. The office number is 056 7721407.

Sheep
On the sheep front, numbers remained comparatively small with 600 on offer.
Butcher lambs ranged between €142 to €161 per head with factory types €128 to €145 per head with store lambs ranging from €68 to €113 for ewe lambs.

There were more buyers for store lambs with ram lambs are still being discounted.
A lot of lambs are lacking flesh and its possible to see, for example, 53 kilo making €144 with well feed lots making €158 to €160.

Factory types were a steady trade with prices ranging from €123 to €145 per head.

Weanling Sales
Numbers for our Tuesday weanling sales have proved disappointing so far with only 220 going through the ring last week.
Trade remains firm with the bulk of the good continental bulls ranging from €2.80 to €3.60 per kilo.
Heifer weanlings also recorded a solid trade with quality lots in demand with prices similar to their male counterparts.

Suckler Sale
Next Tuesday, September 24, in conjunction with our weanling sale we will be holding a special suckler sale at 1pm comprising of approx 60 in-calf cows.
Catalogues available from next Friday.

With a lot of rain being forecast it is possible that factories may again try to drop quotes but this will be very much dependent on numbers they have available.
Until next time do be careful on the farm and good buying, good selling and good luck.
