'A generation of people (in Kilkenny) will be dead and gone before their lanes are tarred'

'A generation of people (in Kilkenny) will be dead and gone before their lane is tarred'

"A generation of people will be dead and gone before their lanes are tarred."

That's according to Cllr Mary Hilda Cavanagh, who made the comment at this month's full meeting of Kilkenny County Council.

At the meeting, councillors from the Castlecomer Municipal District brought forward a notice of motion 'that Kilkenny County Council write to Minister Humphreys asking for a substantial increase in funding for the Community Involvement Scheme and the Local Improvement Scheme'.

"There are currently 51 lanes in Castlecomer Municipal District on the Community Involvement Scheme list," said Cllr Cavanagh.

"Creamery lorries won’t go down the lanes, and I don’t blame them.

"A generation of people will be dead and gone before their lanes are tarred."

The motion was seconded by Cllr Pat Fitzpatrick, Cathaoirleach of Kilkenny County Council.

"Private cars are being wrecked going up and down these laneways," he said.

"Government should come forward with a scheme to clear the backlog."

City councillor John Coonan added to the discussion by stating that this issue is also one being faced by other municipal districts.
