Students donning the new school jersey made by Intosport
In June, Sarah Kelly from Paulstown volunteered at a secondary school in Kibera slum in Nairobi, Kenya, the largest slum in Africa and one of the biggest in the world.
During her visit, the challenges that teachers and students face on a daily basis came clear. School takes place from 6am-6pm Monday to Saturday to try and protect students from some of the dangers of living in the slum with the average wage for teachers being around the equivalent of €66 per month.
It became apparent to Sarah that due to a lack of resources, the students could only focus on academics for the whole school day without extracurricular activities. In order to improve this situation, she helped to set up a number of different clubs and teams including volleyball and football.

Shortly after Sarah returned home, she reached out to Kilkenny based sportswear manufacturer Intosport to see if they could create a custom set of school jerseys for the recently set up sports teams.
Intosport immediately agreed to design and produce a full set of jerseys and when Sarah returned to Nairobi at the end of last month she delivered them to the school much to the delight of the students.
With the new set of jerseys, the school can now enter and compete in sports competitions.
