The ladies Intermediate Cup team at Mount Juliet were beaten away by Borris, who gained revenge for the recent loss against Mount Juliet in the Junior Cup. The match was played at Carlow G.C. Victory was gained at the tie hole in the final match.

The next team in action is the men’s J.B. Carr against Castlecomer, with all five matches at Castlecomer on Thursday.

On Sunday the Summer League continued. It was a triumph for last year’s Junior Captain, Luke Donnelly (3), who returned a great score of 40 points. He turned with 17 points. Things were not looking too good on the 13th where he suffered a double bogey six.

Luke then sprang to life with birdies on the 14th, 15th and 16th holes. He continued the good work with an eagle 3 on the long 17th and finished the round with a safe par for a score of 23 points for his last nine holes. Second, a shot behind, was Conor Spain with 39 points.

Members are reminded that the last day for the next round of the club fourball is May 5. All players are asked to complete outstanding matches as quickly as possible.

The glorious weather and excellent condition of the course enhanced scoring in the men’s Easter singles Stableford. James Daly was a model of consistency, scoring on every hole on his way to victory with an outstanding 40 points.

James needed to be in top form as Kevin Brennan returned 39 points. A birdie on the 17th was the highlight of his round.

LADIES: In glorious sunshine, Susan Boland won the ladies competition sponsored by Eddie Walsh. With a score of 36 points, Susan’s back nine pipped Delia O’Donoghue. Joan Cullinane was third with 35 points.

The final matches in the Spring League are underway. The Peugeot qualifier ladies foursomes is due on Saturday/Sunday, April 26 and 27.

SENIORS - Seniors results, April 16, 1 Jimmy Byrne (9), Christy Lynch (22), L. Power (20), Mal Murphy (19) 76pts; 2 Pat Morrissey (18), John Shore (26), Ger Comerford (24) 72pts; 3 Seamus Walsh (18), Des Murphy (20), Donal Walsh (20), Liam Farrell (21) 71pts.

The Tuesday scramble is very popular. The draw is from 5.30 to 6.30pm. All welcome. Cost for members is €3, and visitors €5.


The second medal of the year was at stake last weekend. Wallaces Homevalue Hardware and garden centre, Wellingtonbridge sponsored the April medal.

From a big field the in-form Tom Purcell (20) was the clear winner with an excellent score of 65. John Byrne (13) was second with 67, one ahead of Peter Goggin (18). The gross went to Darren Clarke, Academy student, Michael Ryan, junior, with a fine round of 71.

Michael continued his good run of form with a brilliant round in the April Monthly Open last Thursday. He shot a gross 67 (3 under) for 41 points, which was good enough to win the under 50s category. David Walsh (11) was the overall winner with a super 43 points.

Tom Murphy (17) won catergory B with 39 points and Tommy Furlong (26) won category C with 38 points.

Last week’s Tuesday fourball, sponsored by President Jim Meggs, went the way of Michael Griffin (13) and M.J. Cullen (20) with 34 points for the 14 holes. The categories went to George Walsh (9) and Mick Malone (16) and John Somers (16) and Tom Crosbie (21), both with 33 points.

The J.B. Carr team got off to a great start with an excellent in over Enniscorthy. New Ross made the best of home advantage, winning the first three matches. President Jim Meggs and Patsy Farrell led the charge with a 5 and 4 victory.

Sean Murphy and Robert O’Dwyer won 4 and 3 and Dan Quigley and Johnny Hosey secured the tie with a win on the 18th. Willie Whitty and Denis Kirwan and Sean Furlong and Jamsie Wallace were both ahead in their matches when called in.

Managers Peter Goggin and Joe O’Farrell were delighted. The county final is against Wexford.

The Duggan Cup team made it a double over Enniscorthy. Bob Doyle and Harry Doran and Val Molloy and Tommy Liston scored good home wins. Jim Larkin and Brian Teague came unstuck at home.

Sean Murphy and Eamon Dungan won a crucial match in Enniscorthy. Pat Whelan and Joe O’Farrell were also looking good when called in. The teams square up again in the Provincial Towns next weekend.

The New Ross Golf Club Pro Am is on Friday, May 16. The course is shaping up nicely. There are still a small number of team and individual places available. A team of three, including meal with your professional partner afterwards, costs €300. Individual entries cost €100. Contact James Roche or Paul Morris in the pro shop on 051-421433.

SENIORS: It’s back to basics on Thursday for normal four person team competition.

The seniors welcome their counterparts from Faithlegg on May 1. Due to a society booking at 11.15am they will revert to a time sheet for the day with an earlier start. It is envisaged the first teams will be away at 8.30am to facilitate the visitors and avoid any interruption to the society group following. Draw for teams this Thursday (April 24) so everyone will know their tee time.
