A globally celebrated Irish designer is marking 30 years of her iconic work with a new exhibition at the National Design and Craft Gallery in Kilkenny.
The work of ‘all-inspiring Orla Kiely’, as she was introduced by her friend, designer Don O’Neill, is instantly recognisable even to those not in the world of fashion — her distinctive pattern designs and vibrant colour pallet joyfully standing out in a world of ‘neutrals’.
Describing the ‘uncomplicated love and joy’ in Orla’s designs, Mr O’Neill said they create a ‘better and more beautiful world’.
At the opening last week, Orla Kiely said Kilkenny is the ‘epicentre’ of art and design in Ireland and she couldn’t be happier to see her work on display here.
Chairman of the Design and Craft Council of Ireland, Peter Hynes, said craft and design is part of Ireland’s creativity and we should celebrate our stars and leading lights.
DCCI wants to honour the past and map a future for others to follow, he said.
Orla Kiely’s work is a symbol of contemporary Irish creativity, DCCI CEO Mary Blanchfield agreed.
Orla Kiely: A Life in Pattern is open Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 5.30pm, until July 19, at the Castle Yard exhibition space. Entrance is free.
