The Lions Club annual Duck Race raised almost €4,000 for the local school

The Kilkenny Lions Club's annual Duck Race was held in brilliant sunshine with a few showers on Sunday, and there was a large attendance from Lady Desart Bridge to John’s Bridge.

Almost 800 ducks participated, launched from the bridge, each sponsored for €5, with the proceeds of €4,000 going to the Mother of Fair Love School, Kilkenny.

The ducks were launched from the bridge by Cathaoirleach Michael McCarthy, Mayor Andrew McGuinness, President of Kilkenny Lions Club Gerry McGovern and Mary Cody, Principal Mother of Fair Love Special School. Maeve O’Flynn Lions project leader was thanked for her excellent organisation of the event.

George Candler gave his usual jovial commentary on the race. A few ducks broke away from the pack towards the end of the race and the first three past the post received prizes.

The cathaoirleach and mayor thanked everybody for supporting in big numbers this event and congratulated the Lions Club for doing great work in the city and county.

President Kilkenny Lions Club Gerry McGovern thanked the organising committee under the leadership of Maeve O’Flynn , the sponsors of the ducks and was delighted to present the proceeds to the Mother of Fair Love School.

Principal of Mother of Fair Love Mary Cody thanked the Lions Club and said that the money will be used to fund the purchase of an interactive panel in the classroom and also a number of new PCs.
