An agreement has been secured to guarantee the rollout of the Department of Education's school building programme, welcome news for three local school projects recently impacted by capital funding pressures.

The Department will now liaise with CBS Kilkenny, Presentation Secondary Kilkenny and St Canice's Co-Ed in relation to the formal arrangements and next steps in respect of the delivery of their individual projects.

The breakthrough has been welcomed by Kilkenny TD John McGuinness, who has acknowledged that the last few weeks of uncertainty has 'been a hard slog for the schools impacted'.

"The news will give relief to these schools and will help safeguard the quality of education in Kilkenny into the future," he said.

"Not only that but these vital projects will also create a large number of jobs."

Minister for Education, Norma Foley TD, thanked her Cabinet colleague Paschal Donohoe for working tirelessly with her Department's officials in order to facilitate the delivery of these urgently required school building projects.

The Department of Education completed over 180 projects last year and there are also over 1,000 other school building projects in the pipeline at various stages of development.
