St Eoghan’s NS in Kilmoganny has transformed what started as a simple school garden project into an imaginative space in which the children can learn through play in their natural, outdoor environment. Click NEXT for lots more photographs from Kilmoganny!
In early March, as part of the Woodies Budding Gardener competition, the students started preparing the earth and designing the small garden layout before sowing and growing fruit, vegetables and wildflowers.
The students were kept busy for the next few weeks - watering, weeding, protecting and supporting the growing crop.
The small garden turned out to be such a success that the school then added mini picnic tables and a mud kitchen, where the children set up their own imaginative ‘school garden cafe’ as they learned through play.
Just before the summer holidays, the students and staff enjoyed tucking into their very own freshly picked peas, lettuce and broad beans.
Potatoes and onions, grown in recycled factory pipes, will remain in the ground for a while longer while tomatoes are also ripening by the day.
