Students in Gowran have been left without a seat on the school bus causing anger and dismay and forcing some parents to leave their jobs in order to bring their children to school.
Local councillor, Denis Hynes (SF) said that there are 47 students affected in the Gowran and Dungarvan area.
“I have spoken to several parents and there is real anger in the community over this issue which is ongoing for years. There are 47 children with no bus passes and no way to get in and out of school. It is only getting worse, last December we had 18 affected students and now we are at 47,” he said, adding that the bus passes are concessionary ones.
“These kids are left on the side of the road and have no way to or from school and they are having to rely on parents and grandparents.
“I know of two people already who have given up their jobs just so they are able to get their kids to school. There is a lot of frustration out there over this, it is a horrendous situation for students and their families to be in,” he said.
Cllr Hynes was also critical of Minister for Education, Norma Foley who he said should have provided an additional school bus.
“It is not good enough that even more people are finding themselves in the same situation as last year,” he said.
