Two different generations - young students and their grandparents - were brought together through mutual bonds last week as Scoil Aireagail in Ballyhale celebrated its annual Grandparents’ Day.
As part of Wellbeing Week and National ETBI Week, the day began with a warm welcome for the many grandparents and significant others in the school. Throughout the morning, guests were treated to a wonderful programme of poems written and shared by students about their grandparents, touching on themes of love, memory, and gratitude.-1743601280572.jpg)
There was also a vibrant celebration of Irish culture, with music from the school’s trad band, Irish Dancing performances, and student-led stories that showcased the rich array of activities and achievements happening across Scoil Aireagail. The performances highlighted not just the talents of the students, but also the strong sense of community and pride that runs through the school.
A particularly meaningful moment in the event was the presentation of a donation to the local Ballyhale branch of St Vincent de Paul. The money was raised from sales of the award-winning financial literacy book, Smart Money for Smart Teens, written by the school’s own third year digital literacy students. The book, which focuses on essential financial skills for young people, recently received national recognition and is a testament to the innovation and hard work of students and teachers.
Chief Executive of KCETB Eileen Curtis also attended the event, as she prepares for her retirement. The school community acknowledged and thanked her for her unwavering support of Scoil Aireagail, and her contribution to education across Kilkenny and Carlow ETB over the years.
The event was filled with smiles, stories, music, and connection - and served as a beautiful reminder of the power of community and the importance of intergenerational relationships.
Attendees also took a moment to remember those grandparents who are no longer with us, whose influence continues to live on through their grandchildren.
At Scoil Aireagail, these events serve to remind everyone of core values of excellence in education, care, community, respect, and equality. It was truly a celebration of family, community, and the heart of what makes Scoil Aireagail a very special place.
