Kilkenny Lions Club has been teaming up with schools in County Kilkenny to carry out tree planting initiatives, as part of its goal to promote a good local environment.
The club is involved in various initiatives to promote this objective including clean ups, spectacle recycling, and tree planting.
The aim of the tree planting is to raise awareness among young people of the importance of biodiversity and nature generally.
Last year, the club teamed up with two secondary schools in the city and aim to expand this project in the coming years.
Kilkenny Lions were hosted recently by Scoil Aireagail in Ballyhale for tree planting on their grounds. Lions received a warm welcome from the school principal Helen McTighe (pictured right) and her team including Denis Doyle the Transition year Coordinator and Bobby Hearne, caretaker.
The school has been very active in promoting the environmental message among its students, with a lovely sensory and vegetable garden which has just recently been planted by the students.
The Kilkenny Lions tree planting event was attended by Gerry McGovern, Kilkenny Lions President, Phillip O’Neill, PRO, and Niall Murphy, Lions Environmental Project leader. Students and staff planted the trees which included pear trees and also a number of climbers. These plants were sourced at Kilkenny SOS Gardeners World and specially selected to provide flowers for insects in the early part of the year and fruit for birds and other insects in the autumn.
The Kilkenny Lions Club team left with a sense that there is a strong environmental ethos in the school. The Lions will be conducting more tree plantings in schools in 2025 and hope to team up with Scoil Aireagail again.
