Grennan College TY students recently fought a tough battle against 7 other secondary schools to secure the title of Battle of Wits 2018 in Kilkenny.
They then went forward with second placed Abbey College, Ferrybank to represent Kilkenny at the regional finals in Athlone. Third place in the event went to Kilkenny College.
Also in contention for the title were Coláiste Éamann Rís Callan, Scoil Aireagail Ballyhale, Coláiste Mhuire Johnstown, Coláiste Pobail Osraí and CBS Kilkenny.
Battle of Wits is a table quiz tournament for Transition Year students organised by the library services of Kilkenny, Carlow, Laois, Longford, Offaly, Westmeath, Leitrim and Roscommon. It consists of three rounds – one in the school, a county final and regional final.
From sport to science and literature to pop culture, the students were challenged on their knowledge of a wide variety of areas, and certain rounds threw the whole competition wide open again for all schools.
“We were delighted to welcome the students from all corners of the county to this entertaining morning , and the response to the initiative was very positive” said Assistant Librarian Aisling Kelly.
“We hope that even more schools will participate and battle of the county title in 2019.”
The initiative was designed to encourage literacy outside of formal education settings, and support individuals to realise their personal, social, and educational potential. It’s part of Kilkenny County Council Right to Read Network’s Action Plan.
