Former Republic of Ireland defender and assistant manager Chris Hughton will be part of Ghana's backroom team for the World Cup in Qatar.

The ex-Brighton and Nottingham Forest boss was given a technical advisor role with the African nation earlier this year and had a helping hand in Ghana's qualification for the World Cup back in March.

Hughton, whose father is from Ghana, won 53 caps for the Boys in Green and was part of the Irish squad in Euro '88 and Italia '90 before he retired from football in 1993.

The former Tottenham Hotspur man was the first mixed-race player to represent the country.

Ghana open their World Cup group stage campaign against Portugal at 4pm (Irish time) today.
