Kilkenny councillors make call for government funding for Waterford Airport

Councillors in South Kilkenny have called for support and funding to develop Waterford Airport

Councillors based in South Kilkenny recently passed a motion that calls on government to prtioritise the development of Waterford Airport.

The motion passed at the most recent meeting of the elected members of Piltown Municipal District proposed the following: “That the members write to the Minister for Transport in support of Waterford Airport in its endeavours to secure funding from the Department to further develop the airport given its strategic importance to the economic development of the South-East region and in particular to enable business and tourism growth and development in County Kilkenny.”

Chair of Piltown MD, Cllr Ger Frisby, stated that it is ‘important to get this matter to government level’ as it would ‘facilitate the whole southern region’ as well as stimulate business and overall growth.

Cllr Tomás Breathnach asked to put the item on the agenda for the upcoming plenary meeting of Kilkenny County Council, to be considered by all the councillors across the county.

“Given the resources of the South-East, it is an essential piece of infrastructure,” he said.

“The South-East is the closest region in Ireland to the continent and an ideal place to fly out of.”
