It's a good start to the new year in this part of Kilkenny!

LATEST: Further plans for Kilkenny part of South-East Greenway are revealed

A large community in County Kilkenny have been given a welcome boost following the release of exciting plans to develop a new stretch of greenway south of the county.

Kilkenny County Council is currently in phase one of developing a greenway link between the Woodstock Estate in Inistioge and the South East Greenway near New Ross, where it will join the wider South-East Greenway.

The project is being funded by Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) and is expected to be completed early in the next decade.

Greenways are trails built to be used exclusively by cyclists, pedestrians and other non motorised transport. They are generally traffic-free routes. With no traffic, the routes are generally safer and can be enjoyed by most members of society.

The project aims to develop a sustainable tourism experience for visitors to the area and increase connectivity between the two areas while promoting environmentally friendly methods of transport to other local amenities on the route including; the South East Greenway, the Nore Valley Walk, the East Kilkenny Cycle Route and the South Leinster Way.

It’s hoped the project will facilitate sustainable social and economic growth within Inistioge, New Ross and other local communities.

The greenway link also intends to enhance social inclusion and promote healthier communities in the locality and contribute to reduction of greenhouse gases in the environment.

The current phase involves investigating the feasibility of the project and to begin engagements with the public.

The first public consultation period will take place over a four week period beginning in February 2025.
