With 14 of the 24 kilometres already completed or substantially finished, the South-East Greenway is progressing steadily toward its full completion.

Glas Civil Engineering Ltd began works on Lot 5A in November 2023, which covers a 5.5km stretch from Ferrybank to Curraghmore in South Kilkenny.

The contractor has received substantial completion status on this stretch, with several key components of the greenway now finished.

A temporary trailhead at Curraghmore is in the works, with vegetation clearance completed ahead of the bird nesting season.

Boundary fencing assessments are also underway, as the greenway continues to take shape.

A Stage 3 Road Safety Audit has been completed and the recommendations from that have been actioned.

Minor finishing works will continue through the first quarter of 2025 to prepare the section for its anticipated opening.

Funding from the Rural Regeneration Development Fund has enabled the progression of the greenway link to Glenmore, including the new Pink Rock Cycle Loop.

A tender process for the project’s detailed design and construction is currently underway, with land acquisition discussions set to resume.

The greenway aims to encourage greater levels of travel via cycling and walking rather than private car use amongst leisure users, tourists, and commuters.

The opening of this route along the River Barrow and its connection with the Waterford Greenway will, in due course, represent a valuable tourism amenity in Ireland in attracting visitors to Ireland’s Ancient East.
