Walsh Cup Round 3- Main Talking Points

Main Man
Kilkenny were hugely competitive until Wexford struck in stoppage time to claim victory and as a result they’d a number of decent performers with Cian Kenny, Niall Brassil, Tom Phelan and Paddy Deegan amongst others putting in big displays. There’s no question though that Wexford had the star performer on the field with Conor McDonald producing a dazzling display as he scored five points from play. The Naomh Eanna man has caused the Cats a lot of trouble down the years and it was no different on Saturday night with the crowd creating a buzz anytime he won the ball.

Turning Point
In a game so tightly matched, goals were going to play a big part in deciding the result and while Kilkenny netted two of them in the second period, they still couldn’t shake off the determined hosts. The home fans got what they wanted in the end with Richie Lawlor’s stoppage time effort leaving Derek Lyng’s side with little or no time to muster a response.

Talking Point
Away from the action on the field, it proved to be a carnival atmosphere as Chadwick’s Wexford Park laid on their lights and fireworks show where their new floodlights were on show for the first time. Having a sold-out crowd at the Model county venue in the middle of January certainly added to the pre-season fare and also made you think of the possibilities if floodlights were installed at UPMC Nowlan Park at some stage in the future.

What’s Next
Wexford now go on to meet Galway in the Walsh Cup Final on Saturday while Kilkenny get ready for their Allianz League opener with Antrim on February 4.
