Showing great intent from the start, the Thomastown minor footballers powered their way to the Roinn A county title with a solid display against St Martin’s (Muckalee-Ballyfoyle).
Quick out of the blocks Thomastown raced into an early lead in Muckalee with points from Alex Begley and Conor Barcoe. They continued to put the hosts under pressure and eventually got in for a goal, Colm Treacy finishing from close range after a well worked move.
Martin’s found scores hard to come by in the first half and couldn’t convert the chances that they did create. At half-time St Martin’s trailed by 1-6 to 0-0.
As expected, the Northern side refocused after the break and started to get a better foothold in the game, resulting in Micheal Ruane firing over two well-taken frees. The Saints then fielded a kickout and, after some good passes, Micheal Keane blasted the ball to the back of the net.
Martin’s were on top at this stage, but couldn’t make it count on the scoreboard. Try as they might they could not reel in Thomastown, who never panicked and got some good points in the second half through Alex Begley, Colm Treacy and Conor Barcoe to run out comfortable winners.
