Andrew Coscoran lit up the Marble City as he stormed to victory in the Streets of Kilkenny 5k.
The Star of the Sea AC runner, a national 1,500m indoor and outdoor record holder, added another achievement to a glittering CV as he set a new record at the city race on Holy Thursday.
A member of Ireland’s team at the Tokyo Games, Coscoran showed all of his Olympic qualities to hold off the attention of a star-studded field and cross the finish line at the Parade in a blistering time of 14:14.
Mitchell Byrne (Rathfarnham WSAF AC) and Michael Harty (East Cork AC), both former winners of the race, were second and third respectively in times of 14:22 and 14:23. Two-time winner and local favourite Eoin Everard (Kilkenny City Harriers) was fourth in a time of 14:27.
Ide Nic Dhomhnaill (West Limerick) was the first woman home in 15:48. She was followed by Lizzie Lee (Leevale AC) in 16:19 and Cheryl Nolan (St Abbans AC) in 16:26.
The sixth year of the Streets the race, which is part of the Peugeot Race Series, has grown in popularity to become a firm favourite with runners of abilities - this year’s was a sell-out before race day.
“This was the best year, no doubt,” said John Maye, chairman of host club Kilkenny City Harriers. “The city came to life, with everyone coming out to support the runners - we’re so proud of what this race has become.”
