The JJ Kavanagh and Sons senior football championship came to its conclusion on the pitch last weekend but the drama may only be beginning after Mullinavat were awarded the title on the grounds that Thomastown were unable to field a team for last Saturday’s county final.
It’s understood that Thomastown had a number of players away and weren’t in a position to field. They are expected to appeal the decision.
If the result stands it will be Mullinavat's sixth senior championship crown in seven years and despite the circumstances they will then go on to represent the county in the Leinster Intermediate Championship later in the season.
Thomastown's last senior victory arrived in 2021 when they defeated Mullinavat and there's a good chance we haven't heard the last of this story.
