Maria Godden (Centre)
Maria Godden from Callan has made the Irish team for the 2024 World Swimming Championships in Doha.
She is the first Kilkenny swimmer ever to do so. She is also on the Irish team for the European Short Course Championships in Romania this December.
Godden is the current Irish Champion at both 100 and 200 metres backstroke and will swim both events at the Europeans and Worlds.
There is also the possibility of swimming in the relays but this will be finalised closer to the time.
Naturally her fellow club members in Kilkenny are both delighted and inspired.
"We will be so proud to see one of our own participating on the world stage, presenting her country,” said Kilkenny Swim Club chairperson Olivia Cuddihy. “ Maria has worked so hard for many years. She is a super role model and mentor to the younger members of our Club. An inspiration for them all. We are excited to see what is up next for Maria.”
Godden trains in the National Centre in UL but continues to represent Kilkenny Swimming Club in national competitions.
