Tributes pour in as Kilkenny legend Pat Henderson steps down from club role

After over five and a half decades of service to his club Fenians and Kilkenny both on and off the field, Pat Henderson announced he is stepping down as a Co Board Delegate.

The former two time All-Star had a distinguished career in winning five All-Ireland titles with Kilkenny as well as five senior county titles with the Fenians (Johnstown).

He was part of an incredible generation of hurlers that included his younger brothers Ger and John, both of whom also went on to play with Kilkenny at senior level.

Monday night’s convention was his last official role as a delegate with the club as the 81 year-old moves on after first being involved in the role after the club was established in 1968.

Fenians chairman Brian Ryan was wholesome in his praise for Henderson. He admitted Henderson will be very hard to replace and acknowledged the years of work he has done for the club.

Former Kilkenny chairman Ned Quinn gave his own thoughts on Henderson’s incredible impact.

“On behalf of everyone in attendance I’m delighted to join with Brian and the Fenians club in acknowledging a colossus in Pat Henderson for his 56 years of service as a member of the Kilkenny county board and a delegate at convention throughout that time,” he said.

“When you reflect back to when the Fenians were first formed, Pat was already an All-Ireland senior winning hurler with Kilkenny and he then became the secretary of the club while he was still playing - it’s hard to imagine that happening today!”

As well as his playing career, which was highlighted by a player of the year award in 1974 he managed Kilkenny to three All-Ireland titles including back to back victories in 1982 and 1983 and his status is legendary for that alone.

As Quinn pointed out though, his impact off the field was just as impressive.

“At county board level he did exceptional work in advising those at the top table with financial matters as well as chairing some of the development squads within the county,” he said.

“He has worked on the development and upgrade of facilities in both UPMC Nowlan Park and MW Hire Dunmore and he continues to do so.

“He has also done outstanding work for second level schools throughout Leinster for the last 20 years so I’m delighted to be able to pay tribute to Pat here tonight.”
