Kilkenny suffered their second defeat in the second Eir under-16 All -Ireland championship after going down to Galway at a windswept John Locke Park on Sunday.
Galway got off to the perfect start when Roisin Coleman scored a goal after two minutes.
Coleman tacked on a point from a free a minute later before Amy Kenny slotted over a great point from the sideline to put the Westerners 1-2 to 0-0 ahead.
Dearbhla Ryan scored Kilkenny’s first point in the sixth minute.
Coleman and Ryan then traded points before Amy O’Shea slotted over a point from a placed ball after one of the Kilkenny players had been pushed in the back.
Galway then hit five unanswered points through Amy Kenny, Roisin Coleman (one free, 0-2 45s) and Sinead Feeney.
Amy O’Shea pointed a free for Kilkenny heading towards the half-time whistle to leave the interval score 1-8 to 0-4 in favour of Galway.
On the resumption of play, Galway continued where they left off in the first half, Roisin Coleman converting a free.
But over the next eight minutes, no scored was added to either tally as both defences stood strong.
In the 39th minute, Dearbhla Ryan ran at speed towards the Galway goal and drilled a powerful shot past the goalkeeper and into the back of the net.
Amy O’Shea and Amy Kenny then swapped points, before Dearbhla Ryan got in for her second goal, another rasper in the 48th minute to narrow the gap to two points (2-5 to 1-10).
Roisin Coleman converted her seventh free and Kayla Garrett added another point for Galway, to which Amy O’Shea tacked on two frees for home side.
