Kilkenny greyhound trainer Paul Hennessy
Kilkenny interest remains strong in this year’s BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby Final as Paul Hennessy, one of Ireland’s most decorated trainers, prepares to send out Barefoot On Song in next Saturday’s Shelbourne Park decider.
Hennessy, who has previously lifted the Irish, English and Scottish Derby titles during a glittering career, will now attempt to add another chapter of success as his charge lines up among the final six.
In Saturday’s semi-finals, Barefoot On Song showed trademark determination, breaking quickly and holding his position in a rough and eventful contest. Despite late pressure and drama behind the runaway winner Cheap Sandwiches, Hennessy’s star safely booked his place in the €300,000 final (with €125,000 to the winner).
It means Kilkenny will once again be represented on the biggest stage in Irish greyhound racing, with Barefoot On Song carrying local hopes into what promises to be a thrilling showdown.
Final Line-Up
Derek Frehill, Director of Racing at Greyhound Racing Ireland, said, "“Paul Hennessy is one of the great figures of Irish greyhound racing, and it’s fantastic to see Kilkenny represented once again on Irish Greyhound Derby final night. Barefoot On Song has shown real heart throughout the competition, and with Paul’s record on the biggest stages, he cannot be discounted. It adds another layer of excitement to what promises to be an outstanding final.”
The Boylesports Irish Greyhound Derby Final takes place next Saturday (Saturday 27th) at Shelbourne Park, where Barefoot On Song and Paul Hennessy will fly the flag for Kilkenny against the very best in the sport.
Doors open at 4.00pm and the final will also be broadcast on Virgin Media 3 from 9.00pm.
