The Barton Cup team, under the stewardship of Denis Carey, were the toast of Callan GC after producing a nail-biting finish against Gowran Park GC on Sunday.
The strong partnership of Richard Condon and Shane Roche played incredible golf to come from two behind after the front nine to win with an incredible putt on the 17th. The second home pairing of Jeffrey Lynch and Martin Cuddihy had a great start and were five up after nine holes. They won 3&2 to leave Callan 2-0 in front.
Away the three games were very close. In the third game Larry Malone and Keith O’Dwyer finished their game three up on the 16th. The other two games were called in with Niall O’Sullivan and John Doheny all square on the 19th and Brian Dignam and Pat O’Keeffe all square on the 17th, giving Callan a 4-1 win.
OPEN - There was a large attendance for the Bank Holiday Open champagne scramble competition. Winners were the West Waterford GC team of Pat, Sonny, Noel and Michael Landers with 98pts. Second place went to the all-ladies team of Breda Walsh, Berna Walsh, Helena McCormack and Teresa O’Neill with 97pts. The weekend also saw a hole-in-one on the fourth from Paul Morrissey.

LOTTO - There was no winner of the golf club lotto jackpot. Numbers drawn were 1, 5, 13. Lucky dip winners (€30) were Noreen Power, Eddie Tallent and Brendan Murphy. Sellers were John Kirwan, John Kinchella and Martin Cuddihy. The jackpot is now €3,250.

The May monthly medal was the feature event at Mount Juliet GC over the weekend.
The best score of the day was returned by by Tommy Malone with a net 70. Tommy scored nines of 40 and 41 respectively on his way to winning the Category One medal. Thomas Hession won the Category Two medal with a 71 nett while Category Three honours went to John Browne with a 78 nett. The ladies medal was won by Niamh Strudwick with a score of 72.
INTER-CLUB - There was no joy for either the men’s J.B. Carr team or the ladies Revive Active Fourball team as both were beaten 3-2 by neighbours Gowran Park GC.
Both matches were very closely fought and went down to the final hole before victory was secured by Gowran Park.
Two more club teams are in action this week. The Irish Mixed Foursomes team and the Fred Daly team are both in action against Kilkenny GC.
LADIES - The ladies day was a very well supported event, with 17 teams participating in the three-person waltz competition. Winners were Sheila MacDonald, Pauline McEnery and Kate Hennessy with 71pts. Dorothy Kilroy’s team, which featured Grange GC players Beth O’Nolan and Hilda Duff, were second with 70pts. Third place went to the team of Joan McHugh, Anne O’Shea and Claire Walsh with a score of 66pts.
The Club Singles Qualifier was held at Mountain View GC last weekend. The competition was a Singles Stroke and was a monthly medal and GOY qualifier. The top 32 qualified for this year’s club singles matchplay.

The Tuesday evening open fourball competition is proving to be very attractive to members at New Ross GC.
Scoring is proving hot in the 14-hole competition, with a countback needed to determine last week’s winner.
The pairing of Brendan Duffin (8) and Noel Dunne (19) took the first prize after returning 35pts. Jacqui Morgan (13) and Maria Burford (13) were runners-up while third place went to John Whelan (15) and Frank Cullen (18), who also scored 35pts.

The ladies competition today (Wednesday) is in aid of the 3Ts (Turn The Tide of suicide). The 18-hole stableford, which includes a senior prize, has online booking and draws at 10am and 1pm.
There will also be a charity day on Friday in aid of Breast Cancer Research. The open greensomes competition is for teams of two players (men or ladies). The competition will also be a qualifier for a ladies national competition.
The Ladies Intermediate team had a good win when they travelled to Courtown and beat their rivals.
The Finn Trophy team do battle with Enniscorthy GC on Monday next at 2pm.
VOLUNTEERS - The Juniors subcommittee are looking for volunteers to help out on Saturdays at 1.30pm. Garda-vetting is required. Names to the Captains or at the office.
SANDBAGS - New sandbags have been purchased. Golfers can support the club by purchasing their own bag for €2 in the pro shop from next week.
SENIORS - A biting wind greeted the 14 senior teams who ventured out for the weekly competition on Thursday last. The champagne scramble saw a tie for first place with two teams scoring 97pts, but a better back nine (48/43) saw Patsy Farrell (15), Steve Travis (17), Dick Cahill (20) and Martin Burke (25) collect the Paddy Whiskey. Jim ‘Ross’ Ryan (18), Willie Naddy (19), Martin Hartley (22) and Les Jastrebski (26) were second on 97pts, with John Kennedy (15), John Watson (16), Richie Aylward (18) and Jim Kehoe (24) third on 94pts. Nearest the pin prizes went to Patsy Farrell and Jim ‘Ross’ Ryan on the ninth and 11th holes respectively.
The seniors will have no game tomorrow (Thursday) as the Rower-Inistioge GAA Classic takes place at the club. As May 18 is open singles day there will be no seniors outing that day either.
