Two goals from star attacker, Conor Drennan, during the closing five minutes of the first half set Kilkenny CBS on the road to a fine win over Castlecomer Community School in a good quality Leinster post primary schools senior hurling quarter-final at MW Hire Dunmore Park today.
The CBS opened backed by the wind blowing right down the field, but it took them a while to get the measure of fiercely committed opponents. With Drennan landed every free that came his way, 'Comer began to lose ground in the second quarter.
On 25 minutes Conor Heary got a run at the losers goal, and he set up Drennan to shoot home from 20 metres. A minute into lost time at the end of the half Drennan struck again, this time when he got to the end of a cross from Joe Sheehan.
Those two big strikes left 'Comer 0-6 to 2-11 behind at the break, and although they had use of the wind to come, a rescue act was a big ask.
In fairness, Castlecomer had a good go, but two goal chances eluded them around the third quarter when their chase was at its most dangerous (2-13 to 0-9).
Although Kilkenny CBS were reduced to 14 men in the 51st minute when a player was red carded after being shown a second yellow, they held out comfortably to bounce back strongly after losing to city rivals, St Kieran's College in their earlier match.
SCORERS: Kilkenny CBS - Conor Drennan (2-8); Conor Heary (0-3); Michael Butler, Cillian Timmons (0-2 each); Sean Kenny (0-1). Castlecomer Community School - Jack Buggy (0-7); Darragh Dooley (0-2); John Dowd, Dan Coogan, Ross Connolly, Billy O'Neill (0-1 each).
