Update college hurling: Kieran's shock as they face trip to Roscommon

Beaten Leinster finalists, St Kieran's College received more than a mild shock when their All-Ireland colleges senior hurling championship quarter-final was fixed for a Roscommon venue.

Kieran's are booked to play Gort Community School on Saturday (2pm). The game has been fixed for Padraig Pearse GAA grounds in Roscommon.

The choice of venue was dictated by a lack of available pitches, apparently.

This means the Kilkenny school will have to travel for hours to get to the grounds, while their opponents have a trip of a little over 45 minutes.

St Kieran's, according to one source, were "speechless" when told how far they would have to travel.

This has turned into a testing season and championship for Leinster League champions, St Kieran's. In their opening match in Leinster against Castlecomer Community School (Kilkenny) the weather was awful and the match should have been abandoned.

Play was allowed continued because there had to be a result on the day, officials were told. The match went to extra time before St Kieran's got well ahead.

At that stage the opposition suggested there was no point in going on, and the schools agreed, with the consent of the referee, to call time themselves.

For the Leinster semi-final against St Peter's College (Wexford), St Kieran's travelled a distance to Enniscorthy, Co Wexford to play the game, again because they were told no neutral venue was available.

Meanwhile, the Kilkenny CBS versus CBS Midleton quarter-final will be played in Clonmel on Saturday with a throw-in time of 2.30pm.
The winners of one quarter-final - not specified yet - will play the Presentation College, Athenry on Monday (2pm), while the winner of the second one will face Ardscoil of Limerick on Wednesday (2pm) of next week.
