File picture: Heavy rain fell on Kilkenny yesterday
A number of businesses in Kilkenny City were hit by last night's sudden torrential downpour, which saw large amounts of surface water accumulate due to the volume that fell in a relatively short space of time.
Several shops on High Street reported taking on water during the heavy showers, which arrived during a thunderstorm. Kilkenny had earlier been issued an Orange Weather Alert.
Kilkenny Weather reported that the rain brought the May total so far to 49.7mm - enough to make it the wettest 12-month period in Kilkenny since continuous records began in May 1957.

Meanwhile, racing at Gowran Park has been called off as a result of the volume of rain that has fallen, leaving the ground unfit. Just over 30mm of rainfall fell since Monday.
