ALERT: Arctic freeze to hit Kilkenny

The latest weather models are all agreeing on a major temperature plunge in Kilkenny, featuring lows of -4C off the coasts of Ireland in the coming days.

Forecasters are as yet unsure just how cold the air temperature on land will become however it will definitely drop over the coming days as high pressure feeds down from the Arctic.

In a recent post, Alan O'Reilly of Carlow Weather explained that the latest charts continue to show an unusual setup with high pressure to the North and low pressure to the South feeding down much cooler air from the Northeast.

"This has potential to bring us some much colder air from the weekend into next week," he told followers.

"The big picture is becoming clearer but this far out the finer details are still unclear around how cold it will get or how long it will last and what the risk of snow might be.

"Winter is going to start much colder than we have seen in recent years so check your heating supplies."
