The war memorial at the Peace Park
A National Day of Commemoration will take place at the Castle Park on July 9, at 11am.
Planned events include a prayer service and a wreath laying ceremony. There will also be a minute’s silence and the national flag will be raised to full mast and the national anthem will be played.
The National Day of Commemoration commemorates all Irishmen and Irishwomen who died in past wars or on service with the United Nations. It occurs on the Sunday nearest July 11, the anniversary of the date in 1921 that a truce was signed ending the Irish War of Independence.
Meanwhile a memorial will take place this Sunday (July 2) at noon at the memorial in the Peace Park in Kilkenny. The Kilkenny Great War Memorial Committee will hold an short ceremony to remember those from Kilkenny who died in the Battle of the Somme. There are 126 people who died in the Battle which took place on July 1, 107 years ago.
The ceremony will consist of prayer, poetry and reflections, wreath laying ceremony and the raising of the national flag, Last Post and Reveille and the playing of the national anthem.
The Cathaoirleach and Mayor will be in attendance. Assembly is at 11.45am and starts at 12 noon. All are welcome
