25 years ago Waterford Treasures Museums opened its doors. Since then the museum has evolved to now include a collection of six museums in the city’s Viking Triangle welcoming visitors from all over the world every year.
This July 4 Waterford Treasures will celebrate its 25th anniversary with a very special Viking-themed event for which tickets are now available at www.waterfordtreasures.com
At the event, visitors can immerse themselves in all things Viking with a range of exciting activities in our Medieval Museum. Step into the dark and atmospheric wine vault to meet a Viking seer, the priestess of Lytir, who will reveal your fortune if you dare to listen.
Indulge in authentic Viking foods and drinks in the Choristers’ Hall, while enjoying Viking storytelling, object handling, and more surprises throughout the evening. Dressing in your finest Viking attire for this unforgettable adult-only celebration is recommended.
The Waterford Treasures Museum collection now includes The Bishop’s Palace, the Medieval Museum, The Irish Silver Museum, The Irish Museum of Time, the Irish Wake Museum, The Epic Walking Tour, and the ever-popular King of the Vikings Virtual Reality Adventure, plus Reginald’s Tower.
As it celebrates its 25th anniversary, the museum's success can be seen in the number of visitors it draws, over 100,000 each year on average.
Commenting on the museums and their legacy, Sara Dolan CEO at Waterford Treasures says, “Waterford Treasures’ greatest impact is probably the effect it has had on Ireland’s oldest city. Six museums now have a home in the City’s Viking Triangle; almost all of the city’s six museums were part of a programme of urban renewal and are housed within historically significant buildings in the centre of the oldest quarter of the city.
"This reinvigoration of these beautiful structures has brought tourists in large numbers. The new revenue encouraged a regeneration of Waterford within the ancient city walls resulting in a tourism hotspot for the city. We have also seen locals take great pride in the area and smart new bars, cafes and other businesses have sprung up. In a very short time the Viking Triangle project truly did change the face of Waterford City and is one of the reasons Waterford won top spots in the Conde Nast and New York Times ‘must see’ destination lists earlier this year.”
A special limited-edition coin has been created to commemorate the occasion. Visitors can purchase the 25th-anniversary coin from the Medieval Museum. For further details see www.waterfordtreasures.com.
