Jesse Malin will perform at Set Theatre on May
The programme for the 2025 Kilkenny Roots Festival is taking shape, with some shows already on sale through the festival website.
The artist attracting most attention is New Yorker, Jesse Malin. Jesse was scheduled to play the festival in 2022 but was struck down with a serious illness and had to cancel.
Jesse was determined to make a return to the stage and following a six month stint in an Argentinian hospital, he is undertaking a small number of dates. London and Kilkenny are the only shows in Europe.
“My new single, Argentina, is out now” said Jesse. “Not only is this the first song I’ve written and recorded in a very long time, it’s also one of the most personal ones. It was tricky being in a country for six months where I couldn’t speak the language and couldn’t walk. Far away from home and not wanting to fade away, I was holding onto my guitar and trying to keep my
head up. I took inspiration from a high school ring worn by my dear and departed close friend, Steve Poss, who was my classmate and comrade in the New York Hardcore scene.
Jimmy G flew down to Buenos Aires to personally deliver to me, and it became a symbol of faith.
The song is dedicated to the nurses, doctors, and physical therapists who give themselves so selflessly to help people in need. I can’t thank them enough.”
The two London shows are sold out and Kilkenny bookings are already very strong, with enquiries from as far away as Germany and New York.
“It’s been years since I’ve played Ireland.” said Jesse. “The people there have always been so supportive and so passionate that I am really excited to get back.
"Because of the condition I’m in right now there will not be a tour, just the London shows and this one and then I come back home. It’s going to be a challenge, but it means that much to me to get over there and play again. Can’t wait to see you there.”
In addition to the live dates a special tribute album, ‘Silver Patron Saints - The Songs of Jesse Malin,’ has been released, featuring Bruce Springsteen, Lucinda Williams, The Wallflowers, Elvis Costelloe, Alejandro Escovedo and many more.
Jesse Malin will perform at the Smithwick's Kilkenny Roots Festival at Set Theatre on May 4.
Tickets for all festival shows are on sale through the website kilkennyroots.com
