Kilkenny singer's new single inspired by Tír na nÓg and personal heartbreak

Patrick Dowling is on the road to his first EP with his next single ‘Colossal’

Patrick Dowling, a 24-year-old singer-songwriter from Slieverue, County Kilkenny, will release his second single Colossal today (Friday, June 6).

The track follows Dowling’s debut Midsummer. While Midsummer was a gentle ballad, Colossal marks a shift in tone. Inspired by the story of Oisín in Tír na nÓg, Dowling reworks the emotions of heartbreak into a modern version of the myth.

He said the song came from a real-life moment of emotional urgency: “I remember running in the middle of the night, going to tell the person I loved that they were what I wanted. It was make or break.”

He describes Colossal as a reflection on what is lost, how deeply felt love can be both powerful and damaging, and the lengths people go to in response.

A video for the single was filmed on location along the Copper Coast in County Waterford.

The project was led by director and producer Alana Daly Mulligan, with cinematography by Hannah Bloom.

According to Daly Mulligan, Stradbally Cove was chosen as the filming location because its topography suited the themes of the song and the legend of Oisín.

Clara Fleming-Duggan, an award-winning dressage performer and actress, plays the role of Niamh Cinn Óir. She said the project was “great craic with great people” and one she will always remember.

The horse Embarr is portrayed by Paddy, a 12-year-old draught horse who was Reserve Champion at the Dublin Horse Show in 2023.
