Tigers, lions, deer, horses, frogs, crocodiles and pigs were among the pieces on show at Glantelwe Gardens

A secret garden along the Erkina river (a tributary of the River Nore) in Durrow, County Laois, was the setting last weekend for a striking display of garden sculptures and architectural ornaments valued in the millions of euro.

Glantelwe Gardens was transformed by renowned garden designer Arthur Shackleton, who worked with Sheppard’s Auction House to create an atmospheric backdrop for the collection.

The garden was dotted with sculptures of tigers, lions, deer, horses, frogs, crocodiles, pigs and dogs of various breeds - all crafted in stone and bronze.

Entry to the garden was free during preview days, which ran on Saturday, Sunday and today (Monday).

The Glantelwe Gardens Architectural Ornaments and Garden Sculptures Auction will take place tomorrow (Tuesday) in Durrow.

Among the highlights of the sale is Lot 601: a horse-drawn carriage once owned by Hollywood actress Maureen O'Hara.
