There are roads across Kilkenny that voluntary litter pickers cannot get to due to the danger involved, according to South Kilkenny councillor Eamon Aylward.

Cllr Aylward raised the comments at this month's meeting of Piltown Municipal District Council.

He made specific reference to the 'shocking' safety concerns around the R448 road in the Mullinavat area.

"They can’t go near that road," he said.

"Volunteers cannot attend to roads like these without traffic management plans in place and this is allowing litter to accumulate in certain areas."

Area Engineer Stan Cullen told the councillor that roads such as the R448 can be inspected but that is 'resource-heavy' and is probably beyond the remit of the already very busy local roads crew.

He stated that he will look into whether additional funding can be acquired to alleviate the issue.
