At the start of lockdown in 2020, a small group of remote working employees in Kilkenny registered a local chapter of the social enterprise Grow Remote and they have gone from strength to strength.
In 2020 Councillor Maria Dollard heard about Grow Remote and the potential that was there for remote working for rural Ireland.
“Immediately I knew that the potential for remote work to unlock opportunities for workers to have more control over their working lives was enormous. With the housing crisis biting deep and people with families stressed and tired from commuting journeys that squandered their precious time, it was clear to me that we needed to tap into the potential to offer people more choice and a better quality of life. Since then, more remote working hubs have appeared all around County Kilkenny from Galmoy to Glenmore ”
There are thousands of remote jobs available in Ireland and Grow Remote in collaboration with Laois Offaly ETB runs a 6 week accredited course to help workers tap into the opportunities that are there.
“We have run several events over the past two years including a boat rip on the Nore and the recent Jobs Fair, where we had a very positive response to our stand,” she said.
Every month the group meet up for a ‘buy your own lunch’ and a social chat. They meet again this Friday (January 27) in Billy Byrnes pub and Grow Remote will pay for the coffee. Everyone who works remotely or is remotely curious is welcome to come along for a friendly social meet up. There will also be information available re the Remote Work Ready Course.
