A Kilkenny TD has slammed the revelation that significant test delays are posing a risk to cancer patients.
According to a senior medical source up to 2,000 patients at St Luke's Hospital in Kilkenny are affected by the testing backlog at the laboratory at Waterford University Hospital.
Deputy John McGuinness said that the delays are 'absolutely devastating for patients'.
"We have had the late Vicky Phelan who campaigned tirelessly for better services and to think that there are still 6,000 patients affected is just reprehensible," said Deputy John McGuinness.
Kilkenny Live has also received the following statement from University Hospital Waterford (UHW) on the matter:
"The pathology services for the South East area are located at 4 sites within the region, the vast majority of the service being located in University Hospital Waterford (UHW).
"The regional service for Histopathology are based in UHW and all samples are sent directly there from the other hospitals and GPs.
"There is currently a backlog in relation to routine samples where the demand is exceeding capacity. All urgent samples have been and continue to be processed without delay.
"Additional sessions are on-going to address the backlog of routine samples."
