A Celtic Cross and ancient church brassware valued at over £1,000 were taken by thieves in a raid on St Canice’s Cathedral at the weekend.
In addition, damage in the region of £500 was done to a valuable stained glass window, through which the thieves entered the Cathedral.
A valuable altar cloth was ripped in two, apparently to wrap up the stolen articles. Missing were several very valuable brass vases, book stands and tall candlesticks, which had been unscrewed from the pulpit.
The biggest loss was a beautiful Celtic cross which adorned the High Altar. It had been presented to the Cathedral by the late Bishop Phair.
BOUNDARY EXTENSION
Proposals to extend the Borough Boundary were accepted in principle by Kilkenny Corporation. If the extension goes ahead the new boundary will extend out to:
Freshford Road (just beyond Aut Even), Castlecomer Road (to a point beyond Glendine Heights, but the golf course is not included), Dublin Road (to Purcellsinch), Castle Road (almost to Danville House), Waterford Road (to a point on the city side of the new hotel), Kells Road (to the first bridge across the stream), Callan Road (to a point on the city side of Seville Lodge), Kilmanagh Road (a point beyond Kilcreene), Tullaroan Road (just beyond Walsh’s Stores).
