Looking towards Kilkenny from Sliabh na mBan
In 1848, a monster meeting, led by the Young Irelanders, took place on Sliabh na mBan to protest about the export of food during the famine.
On that historic day, tens of thousands of people, including many from Kilkenny, made the climb to show their revulsion at the devastation caused by the famine.
These people having witnessed the harvest being exported while Irish people died from starvation.
Robert Duggan will give a talk in Carrick-On-Suir Library on those events and outline plans to hold a commemorative event on July 16 to celebrate the 175th anniversary.
This talk will take place on Wednesday, May 31, at 6.30pm (doors at 6.15pm).
It is free of charge but booking is essential as spaces are limited.
